RV water pump problems: no pressure, constant cycling, and what each fix costs

RV water systems fail in a small number of predictable ways, and the useful first step is figuring out which side of the system has the problem. Listen to the pump. Constant running with no pressure buildup means air, a leak, or an empty tank. Rapid on-off cycling with taps closed means pressure is bleeding off somewhere.
Check the strainer, usually a small clear housing near the pump, for debris blocking flow.
Compare city water pressure to pump pressure if you have both. Good pressure on one side and none on the other narrows down which half of the system has the fault.
Look and listen for a hiss or running water you cannot account for while the pump runs, which points at a leak rather than the pump itself.

The pump cannot reach its cutoff pressure, which means either it is not moving water, or water is escaping somewhere. Air in the line, a strainer clogged with debris, a failed check valve, an empty tank, or a leak you have not found yet are the usual causes, and after winter, a freeze crack belongs on that list too.
